Save Us!
A devotion for Palm Sunday
In the Word
And the crowds that went before him and that followed him were shouting, “Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!” (Matthew 21:9).
Of the Word
The crowds cried, “Hosanna,” which means “save us,” as Jesus walked by. They were confident that this was the Messiah, finally arrived, who had come to save them. By the end of the week, however, they were dispelled and disappointed. They had put their hope in the right man, but they had been hoping for the wrong thing. From what were they looking to be saved? Roman oppression? Hunger? Suffering? These were all too small a goal for our Savior. Being saved from these would be a temporary fix for our bigger, more persistent problem: sin. That is the problem from which Jesus came to save us.
From what are you hoping to be saved? Bad political policies? Natural disasters? Violence? All of these are also mere symptoms of our sin problem. We will be delivered from all these, and more, eternally in heaven, but until then, we have already been rescued from our bigger problem. Our sins are forgiven. We are right with God. The Son of David has indeed saved us.
Walking with my Lord
Dear heavenly Father, thank You for not abandoning us to our sin. Help us to remember the hope we have in You, in the midst of our daily suffering. In the name of Jesus, we pray. Amen.
